Understanding Gamma and a Linear Compositing Workflow

Are you a student starting to learn & understand the ins & outs of compositing, and aren’t quite familiar of the details of gamma & a linear workflow?
Or perhaps you are working professional that has heard the terms “linearization” & “linear workflow”, but haven’t had the time or resources to obtain the details of what these ideas entail?
This presentation is designed to break down some of the finer points of a linear compositing workflow, and demonstrate how gamma behaves in computer imaging software. Understanding these concepts can affect multiple stages of your workflow, including texturing, lighting, and compositing, and is a must for performing a modern-day, linear compositing workflow. This presentation will contain invaluable information for anyone that is interested in lighting, rendering, and compositing CG elements.
Software that will be explained & used in this presentation will include 3ds Max, Maya, Nuke, After Effects, & Photoshop, and we will discuss the important details necessary to respect gamma & maintain a linear workflow.
This presentation will be made by Chas Naylor, Dallas-based visual effects & motion graphics artist. Chas has worked in the industry for ten years, serving as the Associate Director of Motion Graphics for Funimation Entertainment, creating freelance work for various clients including Atari, Square Enix, MTV, & more, and he is currently an instructor for VFX, compositing, & motion graphics in the Media Arts & Animation program at the Art Institute of Dallas.
